How to Compress Images to Obtain an Unpixelated Image at the End?

I have an iPod Touch that is Jailbroken and I downloaded a Star Wars Mighty Muggs iPod theme to replace the icons

It is really good but I would like to make my own. Every time I try to compress a bigger image to a small one in terms of dimensions I can not obtain a perfect image, it is rather pixelated or distorted.

I am using Paint.NET which is a wonderful program but how exactly would I be able to a large image such as this one

To a image that is 60 by 60 (pixels) without pixelation, but clear and nice to look at.

Any help is appreciated and I would love it if I could be able to do a total of four

IPhone and Ipod Touch size?

I'm buying a full device skin to go over my ipod touch, but the skin is meant for iphones. I know there will be openings in certain areas (like for the mic and camera). Will the skin fit fine or is the iphone 3G a nit larger than a 3G ipod touch?

This is sort of a combo question that contains lots of little questions about the two phones mentioned as well as Android itself. Answer as many or as little as you want, any help and multiple opinions are greatly appreciated. :)

Background:
I'm and extremely tech savvy person that is pursuing a Computer Science degree. I can learn just about anything tech related pretty easily, so using the phone is not a concern as much as general curiosity. I'm extremely familiar with Apple's iOS and have been using it since iOS 2, and with my wireless contract expiring in November and lots of news surrounding new smartphones with Apple's iPhone 4 as well as several new Droid models, I've begun to do my homework. I have never used an iPhone because I have Verizon and have had it my entire lifetime (My parents were customers when it was called Bell Atlantic). With the new iPhone 4, I thought about switching to AT&T, but then I read about AT&T's crappy 3G network and them taking away the unlimited data plan. In the end, I decided I would be better off sticking with Verizon, especially after reading about the new Droid models that are coming out. Since I know just about nothing on Android, I have some questions...so here it goes:

Both the Droid X and Droid Incredible run Android 2.1. It is my understanding that Android 2.2 is out, is there any reason why HTC and Motorola decided to use 2.1 instead?

What is your overall opinion of Android 2.1 (Pros and Cons)?

The Droid X will supposedly include Motoblur skin and the Droid Incredible uses HTC's Sense UI, what are the pro's and con's of each and do you like them?

Is it possible to not use the Motoblur or Sense skin?

Is there anybody familiar with both iOS and Android? If so, what are the major differences and is it tough to get used to?

Im getting an ipod touch but I don't want it too look like everyone elses in my class, cause they have no skins or protectors on them. Is there any site, or store that carry's ipod touch jewled cases. Like not realy jewls cause that will cost a fortune, but just looks all sparkly and gemed up. So it looks different. So far I only see regular plastic skins... I'm looking for something like this? This is for an iphone so it will not work for a touch.
