All you need to do is pop your SIM Card in and it will work (the little hole next to the headphone jack is the SIM Card tray eject hole)

AT&T will detect you are using an iPhone and will warn you if you don't have a data plan but by saying you have a smartphone contract you probably meant you have a data plan already so they won't bug you. Everything should work perfectly. No contract renewing whatsoever.

Sorry to say, but you may be buying that iPhone 3G off craigslist or eBay and they may be selling it mainly because it was updated to iOS 4 and iOS 4 causes a huge performance dip for the iPhone 3G. This might make your first-time iPhone use unpleasant. It's a very serious performance dip, when you go from a 3G that is using iOS 4 to a 3GS using iOS 4 you'll be amazed. You'll also be amazed at how fast a 3G on 3.1.3 will run compared to one on 4.0.
