Question: How to differentiate between an iphone 3g and 3gs?

A 3GS is mostly faster at loading things like safari pages, or apps that invole internet connection. An 3G was the version before. Also, 3GS has video, while 3G doesn't (you have to buy a video app, not as good as built in)

I don't think there are any PHYSICAL differences between the two, the 3GS will have the video in it and more (which you can check out at apple.com) but you won't be able to see from the outside i don't think. Sorry, hope I helped.
