Can I buy an iPhone 3G, get the cheapest contract with AT&T, then the next day cancel it?

I am planning on getting an iPhone 3G one way or another. I live in Brazil, which has carriers with 3G networks, they even sell the iPhone here..but if I were to buy it here I would get the cheapest plan (about $647 for the phone and $35 a month plan), but I am trying to save as much cash as possible and as I will be visiting the US for Christmas (I'm a US citizen), I was thinking it would probably be cheaper to buy one there. The only problem is the necessary 2-year contract with AT&T. Could I purchase the iPhone, the cheapest plan from AT&T, and then either the next day or within 2 weeks, cancel the plan, and be able to take it back to Brazil and get a contract with a carrier there?

I know there would be a cancellation fee, so if you know how much that would be please let me know..

I am trying to avoid purchasing an unlocked iPhone as I'm worried about installing the regular Apple system updates and bricking the phone. I also think you have to be a resident of the US to buy an iPhone there, but am not sure, but I do own a condo in Ohio so I think I'm covered..

Here is I am planning to do it but I dont know if it's going to work.I heard that the Apple store will not sell me the iPhone unless I sign a contract with ATT.

My friend has the first gen iPhone in AT&T ever since iPhones came out. I want to get the iPhone 3G for $199 and unlock it since I am in T-mobile. My friend would go to the apple store and tell them that she just wants to upgrade from the old to new iPhone.
Do you think they would sell it to her for $199 or she would have to extend the contract?
and to unlock it, I know quite a few phone stores around Chicago area that unlock virtually any phone for $20.

Unknown memory on my iPhone 3g/iPod?

Recently all of my songs got deleted off my iphone, so i synced them again. When the sync started, it showed the following data: Music=0 MB. Video=0 MB, Photos=2.6 MB, and apps 17.1 MB.. But for "Other" it shows 1.82 GB that was never there before. I have no idea what this "Other" memory can be. My phone finished syncing and there was no double music or anything, and everything on the phone is exactly the same as before my songs were erased. Does anyone have any idea what this "other" memory could be?

I'm a little confused on the iPhone's use of data.
I know you are charged for going on Safari unless you are on wi-fi.
I know you can go on wi-fi instead of the 3g network for data use.
I'm wondering how the apps work. I have a lot of apps that I want to start using but I'm afraid they will somehow connect to the 3g network and I will be charged with data usage. The apps work on both the iPod touch and iPhone, does this mean that apps do not use data?

I just want to know where everyone stands on this phone, I just ordered mine like 3 minutes ago and am expecting to get it in 3-7 days.

I know it doesn't have wifi, but that doesn't really matter because with the data plan on 3g the internet is so sick and fast. Of course if we're going to compare it with the iphone then no, it's not that fast. But a blackberry then yes. This phone can actually watch youtube videos unlike my pearl.. I can't wait to fully review the phone after playing with it. And if I don't like it, then I've got 14 days to return that sucker.

ive been looking at it for awhile now and im debating weather i should get the iphone or the motorola v8 which is 400 dollars. the motorola comes with alot cheaper plan but is 200 more than the iphone. the iphone is 200 but the plans are expensive. what should i get?
the motorola is with t-mobile and the iphone is with att as (everyone should know). the motorola comes with 450 minutes unlimited text and data for $50. att comes with 450 minutes, 5000 nights weekend minutes no text for $70.
