Glide Factor

Glide Factor is a new accelerometer based game developed by Sprimp and published by Chillingo. Chillingo thus far has been on a role with fantastic games such as The Quest, iDracula, and Vector Tanks. Though it hasn’t attracted much attention yet, Glide Factor is sure to be a new gem at the App Store.
Glide Factor consists of four worlds: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta - each with 5 levels for a total of 20. Individual worlds have different colors, schemes and things to avoid. Not to mention, the fantastic retro-techno-style beat music differentiates between each world. I love the music in Glide Factor; it reminds me of Lumines and suits Glide Factor very well.
Your objective is to complete each level as fast as you can to earn badges (achievements) and 1-3 stars depending on how much health you have left at the end of the level. In order to complete each level, you must survive without crashing into any of the many obstacles that litter each level. For the most part, these objects are just cubes that don’t bother you unless you crash into them. But as you complete each level, the game increases in difficulty. Soon enough you will encounter moving objects that are hard to evade. One of the more difficult obstacles is a little ship that I’ve named “Mr. Annoying”. Mr. Annoying can appear at any time in a level, and more than once. This ship will stay directly in front of you, and match your lateral movements until, all of a sudden, it will speed straight at you, so you must be swift to escape its wrath.
The controls for Glide Factor work marvelously well. By tilting your iPod forward or back, you increase or decrease the speed of your ship. By tilting to the left or right, your ship moves either to the left or right. If you continue to tilt your iPod forward, your ship will eventually hit a maximum speed which is diplayed in a bar at the right hand side of the screen. The gameplay isn’t very fast paced even at maximum speed, but that’s not a bad thing. It is very easy to maneuver around simple obstacles and speed past the white boxes which disappear for a few seconds before they reappear again.
Glide Factor can become quite challenging, but there are four items (powerups) which will help you along the way. One of these powerups is a shield which makes you invincible for a few seconds. I highly recommend you put the pedal to the metal and go full speed whenever you obtain one of these essential items, so you can cover as much ground as possible and get through the level fast. To track your progress, just check the bar at the bottom left corner of the screen. Your life bar can protect you for 4 hits. On the 5th hit, it’s Game Over! There are a couple hearts in each level which will restore 1 piece of your life bar. The clock powerup reduces the timer by 1 second. Though it seems like only a measly little second, it can mean the difference of first or second place in the online leaderboards (scoreboards). Lastly, there is a bomb powerup. Once obtained, you only have a few seconds to activate it. To activate the bomb, just shake your iPod without trying to mess up the movement of your ship (I’ve lost more than once by messing up when activating the bomb). Once activated, the bomb will obliterate everything on your screen.
There are badges aka achievements that can be earned throughout Glide Factor. There are 15 badges in total, ranging from bronze, silver, to gold depending on the difficulty of the achievement. The addition of badges adds a lot of replay ability to Glide Factor. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, “I’m an achievement freak!” I’ll be playing Glide Factor nonstop for the next several weeks before I have satisfied myself with all 15 achievements
The only thing I find that is missing from Glide Factor is levels. While there are 20 levels, the iPod fanatic in me is still not satisfied! In a future update, added levels would be much appreciated (such as a world for the rest of the 20 letters of the Greek alphabet- Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, etc.).
Glide Factor is a great game and massive time killer. It’s just another of the fine works of art that Chillingo has published. With fantastic music, achievements, online leaderboards, and 4 worlds to explore. Glide Factor is definitely one of the must have in your 3G iPhone!.

Freeballin'

When I download a pinball game, I have a set of base-level expectations: colorful tables full of targets and accurate ball physics. IUGO's cleverly titled Freeballin' fails to meet the latter. While this four-tabled pinballer looks fantastic on the crisp iPhone screen, the game is held back by wonky ball trajectories and the bizarre inability to bump the table.
Freeballin' features a handful of different play modes: score attack, time attack, and adventure mode. The first two play out like normal pinball. By far, the best mode is Adventure, which adds a collection mechanic that gives bouncing off the cars and penguins that decorate the tables some actual purpose. You must complete specific tasks, like running up a ramp or smashing cars, to locate artifacts. These artifacts can be spend in a store to buy extra power-ups for later play, such as ball savers, extra time for "missions," and extra balls.
The boards themselves are very attractive, each with a well implemented theme such as the beast-ravaged big city in Monsteropolis, the day-glo fantasy of Dreams & Nightmares, the jungles of Tiki Trouble, and the Geometry Wars-esque Neometric. There are typically large features on each board, like the massive squid in Monsteropolis that give each scene some needed personality. Each board has extra areas to explore, such as the boss battle room above the squid's head. I think the boards are a touch uneven, though. Monsteropolis and Tiki Trouble seem a lot more "alive" than the other two tables.
But even the boards I liked were partially spoiled by questionable ball physics. The flippers work just fine by touching each side of the screen, but the actual trajectory of the ball is a learned thing. It's not natural. The ball seems to follow pre-set paths and then the game will sometimes fudge its trajectory to fit an objective, such as the boss battle in Monsteropolis. I fired the ball in the general direction of the ramp leading to the boss' weak spot, but then watched as it was nudged by an invisible hand right on to the ramp.
I'm also surprised there is no bumping or tilting in Freeballin', which is a highlight of playing real world pinball. Seeing just what you can get away with is half the fun of hip-checking a machine in an arcade. The iDevices have tilt and shake sensitivity. Why was this essential feature overlooked?
Freeballin' is a nice looking game with excellent music, but looks only get you so far. The ball physics feel false. I did not like having to "learn" where a ball would go when I hit it -- pinball is a game of feeling and instinct. The Adventure mode is a very cool touch and I'd love to see it explored in a possible Freeballin' sequel or another pinball game from a competitor.

BeejiveIM 2.1.0

I have heard so much hype about BeejiveIM. So I decided to try it out for myself. And you know what? BeejiveIM certainly lived up to its hype and reputation. I have tried free, cheap and relatively expensive IM apps. But NONE comes close to BeejiveIM in terms of features and instability.
BeejiveIM literally has everything anybody could ask for. It supports a wide array of IM platforms including AIM, Google Talk, ICQ, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo and even Myspace, and Facebook. Once you’re logged into any account, you can change your status from Available to Away, Busy, or Invisible. You’re also able to make a custom message under any status. What had me really impressed was the ability to change your profile status and even your avatar!
Probably one of the key features that Beejive has to offer is the amount of customization. You are literally able to customize every bell and whistle imaginable. You can add friends into a “favourite category” and into groups such as AIM Bot, Buddies, and Recent Buddies (or you can just add a new group such as Enemies). You can also add nicknames to your friends, block, or just delete them off your Buddy List. You can change the background wallpaper to anything you like (it also comes included with a few nice ones), change the text bubbles, the layout, and even change the sounds that you receive when you get a new message (default= iChat sounds, AIM, MSN, or Yahoo). There are just tons of customization features available in Beejive and I am not sure if I had experimented with it all!
Besides the enormous amount of customization options, there are just as many features to make BeejiveIM an overall outstanding app. By tapping the top portion of the screen (on the person’s screen name), a little transparent menu drops down with 4 options: to e-mail a chat log to yourself, send a picture, send a voice recording, or to end the chat. Depending on if you’re talking to more than one person at the same time, the avatars of your friends (or enemies) come up on the mini menu as well.
You switch conversations with ease by clicking on the person’s avatar to change chat screens. Or you can just change/ delete conversations under the chat tab. A feature that is mind boggling is the ability to accept file transfers and view them in QuickTime. For example, you can listen to audio clip/ songs/ videos right on your iPod that are sent via chat. You can then forward the file to other friends on your Buddy List. Unfortunately though, you’re not able to save the music/ videos to your iPod. You can also view pictures sent via links. Beejive also has a built in web browser so you’re able to view any URL sent by your mates. Another extremely cool feature is the ability to send and receive free SMS messages via your AIM or Yahoo account!
To me, Beejive is THE perfect IM app at the moment. Two things that Beejive could look at is to support group chat as well as include a Skype interface? All I can say is don’t be put off by the price tag! BeejiveIM not only delivers but OVER delivers! Check it out!

The Oregon Trail

When I first startup The Oregon Trail I was greeted with fantastic graphics, and I think to myself another quality product from GameLoft.
The object of the game is to take your family across the United States along the Oregon Trail. Along the way, there will be many obstacles (disease, broken bones, rivers, different paths) and you must choose what you think is the most effective. For instance, should you spend some time resting and letting your son’s broken leg heal which in turn diminishes your food ration, or should you continue along, perhaps at a slower pace making you arrive later? There seems to be a decision you need to make at every turn. There are also random events that will thwart the progress of your journey for example, your son is going to be taken by an eagle etc (I shall not spoil the fun, find out for yourself!)
Besides the “main plot” of getting across the USA, there are 8 mini games or”sub-plots” ranging from hunting, fishing, river crossing, rafting, wagon repairing, telegraph (a memory game), berry picking and panning for gold. They are cute and fun the first time you play them, but after a few goes, it becomes quite repetitive and they are also rather simple.
The visuals in the game are excellemt. The cartoony graphics are perfectly suited and there is quite a bit of humour throughout the game. The characters sometimes ramble a little something but the majority of the time, you’ll just be listening to the hooves of your ox and your moving wagon. Of course, the faster you go, the faster those sounds become.
The game is fun and educational. It gives you some information about the times and neat little facts as each screen loads. It also forces you make some choices in terms of paths and missions which in turn will affect your travels. The only issue I have is the screen loads too frequently in between minor games and decisions so much so that these facts can become somewhat repetitive. It’s also educational as you have to make some choices in terms of paths and missions which in turn will affect your travels.
Overall I had fun and a good laugh with this game. Definitely recommended.

Aqua Moto Racing

I am not really a huge fan of games in the racing genre. These games tend to keep you excited for at the most 15 minutes of game play. This all changed when I got my hands on Aqua Moto Racing. I am simply hooked to this racing game.
Besides the adrenaline pumping racing action that I find myself being immersed into, I am also impressed by Aqua Moto’s graphics and layout. Aqua Moto is able to deliver graphics that has reached a level of crispness. There were moments where I found myself impressed at the reflection of the background on the water as I raced around a bend. The sky, the water effects, the racers themselves, they have a level of polish that many other games have a hard time attaining. The layout of this game is very clean, leaving the screen both informative but without obscuring you enjoyment of the scenery.
The actual game play consists of automatic acceleration which is excellent as this leaves you to focus on steering. If you need to slight or significant speed boost, all you have to do is to hold on the BOOST button located at the bottom right corner of your iPhone. The BOOST is the Aqua Moto’s version of nitro and it based on a recharging system. Use it strategically as it may take awhile to recharge once it run on empty.
While there may be only 3 environments, the placement of buoys and ramps does enough to change the tracks’ feel. That being said, the inclusion of those three different environments, 18 tracks, 7 Championships, and a reverse mode makes Aqua Moto Racing a large game. There is a time trial as well. Perhaps the best part of the game is the ability to upgrade your top speed, acceleration, steering and boost based on points collected that is dependent on your position in your last race.
One of the reasons why I am hooked on this game is that the longer you play, the more you unlock and it will take a while to explore the whole breadth of the game. Also, the Online World Ranking system is another incentive to keep playing this game. As you unlock option after option, and as you upgrade your racer, that global leaderboard stares you in the face, taunting you to beat the high scores. In an interesting twist, Resolution Interactive AB included a Ghost Play option to race against the World’s Best. This can only be done by registering a profile online, which is fine by me.
Two suggestions which Resolution Interactive AB can consider for its future version of this game is to include a mini map so that the player could gauge how far the opponents are in front or behind. This I guess will add more excitement to the race. The other thing is that if you don’t register to create a profile for yourself, you’ll be stuck being called GUEST for your whole gaming experience. This I think should be changed.
All in all, Aqua Moto Racing is top of its class. Once you play this racing game, you’ll never want to race in another game again. Top marks. Get it now!

Space Bikers

I always love iphone games from Chillingo especially after playing iDracula and QUEST. So I was extremely excited with this new offering, Space Bikers. And you know what, Chillingo delivers again!
The story goes like this. A company of space bikers crash landed on earth and you need to recover items to help rebuild their mother ship. That’s where the fun begins!
When you start the game, you are asked to choose from three different characters. They each drive either of the following wheels: bike, trike, quad. The characters seem very fragile and their wheels quite flimsy. So beware! The goal of the game is to collect light bulbs, batteries, fruits, golf balls etc to be able to set up your ship and go back to whatever planet these little characters are from. After each level, you’d be asked to complete mini games. Energizing a little bulb or match pairs are some of them.
The graphics of this game is phenomenal and the game play is smooth. I find controlling the characters a little bit tough and I needed more time to be able to master it. Maybe the developers could include a tutorial of sorts to allow players to get used to the controls.
There is also the lack of checkpoints and if you hit something badly or fall off your wheels, you restart at the very beginning no matter how far you have progressed in the game. This can be quite tiresome. Also some tweaks need to be made as when the characters or their wheels get stuck within books, plywoods, they somehow get fused with it like being caught in quicksand!
All in all an excellent game insanely priced at $0.99 with many more levels promised. I don’t see how you can miss out on this. Grab it now!

Pocket God
I was wondering what the hype about Pocket God is, so I decided to try this application. And my word, it is one of the most amusing apps I’ve ever played with to date.
Basically, you are in control of cute little pygmies on an island. At any one time you decide the fate of up to 6 pygmies (you start off with one and you can add up to 6 of them). Tap to pick up the pygmies or flick them if you like. Now this is where the fun begins. You can then throw them into the ocean, drop them down to the island from the clouds, smash them with a boulder, zap them with a blot of lightning and in the latest update, feed them to sharks! Flicking the pygmies can be fun too and if done right, you can even flick them into the volcano in the background. Once three pygmies have been flicked into the volcano, it will erupt and spew lava all over the island, which in turn will light the remaining pygmies on fire. You can also tilt your iPhone to affect gravity, and shake your iPhone to create an earthquake. You have so much power that you can turn the day into night and vice versa. At night, the islanders actually sleep with a slight snore!
Both the graphics and sound effects in Pocket God are top notch. The pygmies will make a number of comical sounds as they are sent to their watery (or fiery) deaths. These sounds range from ‘whoop’ sounds as they are tossed into the ocean; as well as other noises hard to demonstrate with words. The pygmies also have a somber and fearful look to them, but at times they giggle and smile and you wonder why you are inflicting such atrocities to them!
What I would like to see in the next couple of updates is that the developers should consider instead of constantly inflicting pain to the poor pygmies, how about rewarding them instead, like giving them food and water to grow, or toys to make them happy. How about a function to tickle them!
Overall, I believe Pocket God is a must have application for your iPhone and it certainly lived up to its hype. What’s more the developers are constantly working to improve this application with at least 3-4 more updates in the weeks to come. After that, they intend to move the game into a persistent experience with island customizations, and maybe some RPG style of play. I can’t wait! Go get it now for $0.99!

Heavy Mach
We know in some countries, people pay to smash up plates and bowls in a room to de-stress. Now you can de-stress in a fun and less messy way by playing Indie’s new blast them all off tank shooter game, Heavy Mach.
Heavy Mach features some beautiful graphics that combines with simplistic yet challenging game play. The game is split into 6 missions with multiple stages (4-5) within each mission. A total of 60 stages are provided and can range in length. The developers have promised more missions in their frequent upgrades. In the latest version 1.12, an endurance game play stage has been added. This is where you attempt to survive as long as possible with the onslaught of all kinds of enemies with varying fire power.
The objective of Heavy Mach involves moving your tank and destroying a large variety of tanks, helicopters, and heavy artillery before ending the stage by blasting off giant boss enemies. Your enemies fire different types of weapons, from basic straight-shooting rounds to swerving heat-seeking missiles. You are however not left in the lurch with nothing to defend yourself. Besides your tank’s armor you have the ability to jump. Jumping can be upgraded to a double jump, which allows you to tap the jump a second time while in midair. Jumping is useful in avoiding falling into various gaps in the platforms that appear along the route as well has dodging missiles, lasers and other fire power that the bad guys throw at you.
You can also upgrade your tank along the way. There are temporary upgrades to weapons and armor that appear in the form of boxes that fall from slain enemies. Permanent upgrades come from experience points gained from destroying enemies. You have a choice of upgrading your movement, armor, or weapon strength, with a total of 18 points to be gained and spent throughout the game.
Different types of weaponry that can be collected and added to your tank. Some examples are heavy-damage artillery rounds with short range, droplet bombs that shower an enemy with shells from the sky, and laser beams that shoot quick and straight. Some weapons work better on certain enemies than others. A tip is to save your heavy artillery until you need to fight the big bosses. Otherwise you will never be able to defeat them with just basic rounds of bullets.
Controls in Heavy Mach are simple and intuitive. Moving your tank involves left/right tilt of your iPhone. Tap on your targets to fire weapons at them. To jump, you will need to tap on a lever at the bottom left hand corner while to switch your weapons, tap the weapons icon next to the boost lever. This will cycle through your available weapons. Just stop tapping once you’ve found the weapon you want. With the latest versions, the menu bar at the top left hand corner is working and you can save and exit your game or simply pause it to scratch your bum without being killed!
Overall Heavy Mach is an exciting “blast them away” game. You will definitely be addicted to it just like I have. There are still small kinks in the game which the developers should iron out like except for big bosses, you actually move your tanks right through enemy vehicles without any ill effects. Plus, your tank never turns around, so you can't fire behind you. Nor does Heavy Mach seem to keep track of your score, which is strange for such games. It will be nice to have varied backgrounds and a variation of attacks from different combinations of enemies. Other than that, Heavy Mach is one of the games that you should have in your iPhone. Heavy Mach is on sale now for $0.99!
